Upstash Vector TypeScript SDK guide
Quick-start guidance and an entry point for Upstash Vector features, TypeScript SDK usage, integrations and supported frameworks.
What Upstash Vector TypeScript SDK guide does
This skill, upstash-vector-js, lives in the upstash/vector-js repository, the TypeScript client for Upstash Vector. It is documentation only. SKILL.md gives the agent a short quick start: install the SDK, connect to an index, then upsert vectors, query them and manage namespaces. Its example builds an Index from @upstash/vector using the UPSTASH_VECTOR_REST_URL and UPSTASH_VECTOR_REST_TOKEN environment variables, upserts one vector with metadata and runs a query with topK set to 5.
For anything past the basics, SKILL.md points the agent to four more files. sdk-methods.md covers upsert, fetch, delete, query, resumable query, range, info and reset, each with pitfalls. Vector dimensions must match the index, upsert cannot take both a vector and data, a delete call accepts only one of ids, prefix or filter, and query scores are normalized between 0 and 1. The features folder explains namespaces, hybrid and sparse index structures, and metadata filtering.
What the agent produces is TypeScript code and explanations based on the patterns in these files. Running that code needs an Upstash Vector index with its REST URL and token.
Install
git clone https://github.com/upstash/vector-js.git && mkdir -p .claude/skills && cp -r vector-js/skills .claude/skills/upstash-vector-jsRead the security check below before you run it. The repository's own instructions win if they differ.
Security check
What the skill's files do, from reading them. A flag that nobody has checked yet says "Not checked", never "No".
- Runs scripts
- No
- Uses the network
- Yes
- Installs hooks
- No
- Asks for secrets
- Yes
The scan found no scripts and no hooks. It flags secrets and network use: the SKILL.md example reads UPSTASH_VECTOR_REST_URL and UPSTASH_VECTOR_REST_TOKEN from the environment, and code written from it sends requests to your Upstash Vector index over HTTP. The skill files are Markdown only. Keep the token in environment variables rather than source files, and try generated code against a test index, since sdk-methods.md documents reset and delete calls that remove data.
Scan details: SKILL.md mentions an API key, token or secret variable. SKILL.md instructions include web requests or URLs to fetch. Checked at commit ad3ad721a1d5.
Use cases
- Writing upsert and query code for an Upstash Vector index
- Organizing data with namespaces or hybrid and sparse indexes
- Adding metadata filters to queries and deletes
Limitations
- Needs an Upstash Vector index plus its REST URL and token
- Upserting raw data works only if the index has an embedding model
- Written for the TypeScript SDK in @upstash/vector, which is installed separately with npm
- The repository documents no install step for the skill; the listed command copies the skills folder into a project's .claude/skills directory
