What Descript does

Descript is a video and audio editor built around the transcript. Anything you record in Descript or import gets transcribed, and cutting, moving or deleting words in the text edits the media to match. A conventional timeline is still there for finer work. Transcription covers 25 languages.

AI features sit on top of that. Underlord is an AI co-editor that takes instructions and makes edits for you. Studio Sound removes background noise and enhances voices, and other tools remove filler words and retakes, correct eye contact, replace backgrounds, cut clips for social platforms and translate video. Descript can also generate video, voice, music and images to fill gaps. These features spend AI credits, and imported or recorded media counts against your plan's media hours.

Descript runs as a desktop app on macOS 14 or Windows 11 and newer, and in the browser. An API and an MCP server, open to all paying users in early access, let you import media, apply edits and publish from code, from Zapier or from an AI assistant such as Claude. API usage draws from the same credits and media minutes.

It suits podcasters, course makers, marketing teams and anyone producing talking-head or screen-recorded video who would rather edit text than scrub a timeline. Business and Enterprise plans add shared brand templates, and Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM and audit logs.

Privacy notes

Descript's privacy policy says it may use Projects to analyze and improve the service unless you turn off the Share Data with Descript setting. It also says staff do not access your Projects unless you consent or the law requires it.
