WeftCut

A free, open-source desktop video editor that AI agents drive over MCP while you watch each edit and can undo it.

What WeftCut does

WeftCut is a desktop video editor for macOS, Windows and Linux that exposes its editing tools to AI agents through a local MCP server. You copy a connection snippet from Settings > Agent into Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client, and the agent can trim, split, add transitions, keyframes, effects, captions and markers. A skill file ships with it to tell the agent what WeftCut can do.

Edits land live under a checkpoint, and a change feed lets you review them or undo. The MCP server listens only on localhost and uses a bearer token. WeftCut bundles no AI models. The connected agent does the reasoning, and optional transcription and scene analysis use local engines you download on demand (whisper.cpp, FunASR) or a cloud provider you configure.

It also works as a standalone editor, with keyframes and Bézier curves, per-clip effect chains, chroma key, caption import from SRT, VTT or ASS, audio mixing and code-driven animated overlays called Motifs. Export formats are H.264, HEVC, 10-bit AV1, ProRes and DNxHR.

Prebuilt downloads cover 64-bit Windows, Apple silicon Macs on macOS 13 or newer, and x86_64 Linux as an AppImage or .deb; other targets build from source. The latest release is v0.3.0, published October 4, 2026, and the README says the macOS installer is not yet verified. WeftCut is MIT-licensed, with FFmpeg bundled under LGPL and GPL terms. It suits video editors and creators who already use an MCP-capable agent.

  • Remove silences from an interview and tighten the pauses.
  • Split a take at every shot change and label the scenes.
  • Restyle every caption in a project in one step.
  • Transcribe speech into editable caption tracks.
  • Have an agent build animated titles or drawings as reusable Motifs.

Who should use it

  • Creators who already use Claude Desktop, Cursor, Codex or another MCP client.
  • Developers who want a video timeline they can script through an agent.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Intel Mac or ARM Linux users who want a prebuilt download; those targets build from source.
  • Anyone expecting built-in AI without connecting an agent or a speech provider.

Strengths

  • Every agent edit is visible and reversible through checkpoints and a change feed.
  • Free and MIT-licensed, with no bundled model weights.
  • Exports to H.264, HEVC, 10-bit AV1, ProRes and DNxHR.
  • Works as a full editor without an agent.

Limitations

  • Early release (v0.3.0 at the time of checking).
  • The macOS installer is not verified, so macOS asks you to allow it in Privacy & Security settings.
  • AI editing depends on an external agent, and transcription needs a downloaded engine or a cloud provider.
  • Prebuilt binaries cover only Windows x64, Apple silicon and x86_64 Linux.
