Excel spreadsheet tools

For any task where a spreadsheet file is the main input or output: reading, editing, fixing, creating, cleaning or converting .xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .csv or .tsv files.

Agent skillAgent skills

What Excel spreadsheet tools does

The skill gives the agent a method per task. It creates and edits workbooks with openpyxl when formulas or formatting matter, moves bulk data with pandas, previews sheets with markitdown, and loads a workbook twice when it needs both formulas and their values. These libraries are expected to be preinstalled; the agent installs one only if an import fails.

Every output follows a short set of rules: a professional font, live formulas instead of totals computed in Python, the user's exact tab names and headers, and a visible note for each assumption or hardcoded number. In an existing file, that file's conventions win. Because openpyxl saves formulas without cached values, the agent runs scripts/recalc.py, which recalculates the workbook in LibreOffice, rewrites it in place and returns JSON with formula and error counts. It fixes the reported cells and runs it again. The skill warns that a clean recalculation shows formulas evaluate, not that they are right.

It also lists functions LibreOffice cannot evaluate (XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and others), openpyxl traps such as losing macros from .xlsm files, and color and number formats for financial models. The end product is a spreadsheet file whose formulas recalculate when inputs change.

Install

Read the security check below before you run it. The repository's own instructions win if they differ.

Security check

What the skill's files do, from reading them. A flag that nobody has checked yet says "Not checked", never "No".

Runs scripts
Yes
Uses the network
Yes
Installs hooks
No
Asks for secrets
No

The folder ships 12 Python scripts. scripts/recalc.py starts LibreOffice headless with a temporary profile and a recalculation macro, then overwrites the workbook in place. Where a sandbox blocks Unix sockets, scripts/office/soffice.py compiles a small shim with gcc in the temp folder and loads it through LD_PRELOAD. The scan flags network requests in eight scripts; in recalc.py the only URL is an XML namespace inside the macro. The scan found no hooks and no secret handling. Read the scripts, keep a copy of any workbook before the agent recalculates it, and try the skill in a test folder first.

Scan details: Ships 12 script files: scripts/office/helpers/init.py, scripts/office/helpers/pptx_chart.py, scripts/office/helpers/pptx_slide.py, scripts/office/helpers/pptx_theme.py, scripts/office/soffice.py, scripts/office/validate.py, …. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/helpers/init.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/helpers/pptx_theme.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/validate.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/validators/base.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/validators/docx.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/validators/pptx.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/office/validators/redlining.py makes network requests. skills/xlsx/scripts/recalc.py makes network requests. Use cases

  • Add formula columns to an existing Excel workbook without breaking its layout.
  • Build a financial model with labeled assumptions and live formulas.
  • Clean a messy CSV or TSV file into a proper spreadsheet.
  • Convert data between tabular file formats.

Limitations

  • Not meant for Word documents, HTML reports, database pipelines or Google Sheets API work.
  • Recalculation needs LibreOffice (`soffice`) on the PATH.
  • Avoids XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and other functions its LibreOffice cannot evaluate.
  • Licensed as proprietary: use falls under your agreement with Anthropic.
