Lune

MCP server that grounds AI agents in full-text computer science papers from top-tier conferences, for students and researchers.

What Lune does

Lune is an MCP server that lets an AI agent search computer science papers from top-tier academic conferences. The homepage says it draws on A / A* conference papers and leaves out workshop, findings, tutorial, short, abstract and demo papers. The agent searches that collection and cites what it finds, rather than answering from memory or the open web.

According to the docs, paper results carry abstracts, authors, venue and publication metadata, citation relationships and stable source links. Full text reaches the agent when Lune has permission to index a paper. Lune also returns curated guidance for literature reviews, evaluation design, ablation studies, research writing, peer review and venue selection.

You can use it in three places. Lune Miniapps runs on luneresearch.com without setup. ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and other web chatbots can add Lune as a connector or plugin. Local MCP clients such as Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and Codex connect to the hosted server at https://mcp.luneresearch.com (opens in a new tab), and the optional @retrograde-labs/lune-cli package (Node.js 22.12 or later) can write that configuration for you.

Usage is metered in requests. Most tool calls cost one request, batch tools charge per item, and the daily allowance resets at midnight UTC. The tool suits computer science students and researchers who already work with an AI assistant and want answers tied to published papers. The official pages do not describe coverage of fields outside computer science.

  • Finding foundational and recent papers on a computer science topic from inside an AI chat
  • Following what a paper cites and which later work cites it
  • Checking a specific claim against indexed papers
  • Getting guidance on evaluation design, ablation studies and research writing

Who should use it

  • Computer science students and researchers who already use an AI assistant
  • Developers running MCP clients such as Claude Code or Cursor who want paper citations in answers

Who should look elsewhere

  • Research outside computer science, since the official pages describe only computer science conference papers
  • Heavy use on the Free plan, which allows 10 requests a day

Strengths

  • Limits sources to A / A* conference papers and excludes workshop and short papers
  • Works inside existing AI apps through a hosted MCP endpoint, connectors and a CLI
  • Free plan has no feature gates, only a daily request limit
  • Privacy policy says queries are not used to train machine-learning models

Limitations

  • Full text is available only when Lune has permission to index a paper
  • Daily request caps of 10, 300 or 600 depending on plan, with credits needed beyond that
  • No REST API is documented; the MCP server is the only programmatic interface described
  • The CLI needs Node.js 22.12 or later

Privacy notes

Lune's privacy policy, operated by Retrograde Labs, says it does not sell personal information and does not train machine-learning models on your queries.
