What it does
codebase-memory-mcp is an MCP server, written in C, that parses a code repository into a knowledge graph so an AI coding agent can ask structural questions (what calls this function, which HTTP routes exist, what a change affects) instead of reading files one by one.
It ships as one native executable for macOS, Linux and Windows. Parsing uses tree-sitter grammars compiled into the binary, and the README lists 162 languages. A hybrid LSP layer adds type resolution for a smaller set, including Python, TypeScript, Go, Java and Rust. Agents reach the graph through 17 MCP tools covering search, call tracing, architecture overviews, change detection, Cypher queries and architecture decision records. A 3D graph viewer is built into the binary and opens at localhost:9749.
The installer finds supported agents on your machine and writes their MCP configuration; the README counts 45 client surfaces, among them Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Cursor and Windsurf. The authors describe the design in an arXiv preprint and report 83% answer quality with 10 times fewer tokens than file-by-file exploration across 31 repositories. Indexing and queries run locally without an API key.
Why it matters
Coding agents usually explore a repository with grep and file reads, which burns tokens and tool calls. This project indexes the code once into a graph and answers structural questions from it. The README's own example puts five such queries at about 3,400 tokens against roughly 412,000 by reading files. It is a single local binary, so there is no language runtime, Docker container or hosted service to set up.
Main features
- Indexes code into a persistent knowledge graph of functions, classes, calls and routes
- Tree-sitter parsing for 162 languages, per the README
- Hybrid LSP type resolution for a dozen languages, including Python, TypeScript and Go
- 17 MCP tools for search, tracing, impact analysis and Cypher queries
- Built-in 3D graph viewer at localhost:9749
- Indexes Dockerfiles, Kubernetes manifests and Kustomize overlays
- Installer auto-configures detected agents; `--skip-config` installs the binary only
Who it's for
- Developers using MCP-capable coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI on large codebases
- Teams with multi-service or polyglot repositories who want call chains and cross-service links in one graph
- People who want code indexing that stays on their own machine
Strengths
- Single native binary with no runtime dependencies
- Processing stays local; the README says code never leaves your machine
- Wide language coverage through compiled-in tree-sitter grammars
- Releases are scanned on VirusTotal and the scan results are linked from release notes
Limitations
- Microsoft Defender may flag the binary as Trojan:Script/Wacatac.B!ml; the project calls this a false positive
- Semantic type resolution covers only a subset of languages; the rest get syntax-level parsing
- Some client surfaces need manual configuration
- The installer writes to your agent configuration files, and speed and token figures are the project's own measurements
Getting started
On macOS and Linux a one-line script downloads the binary and configures detected agents. Windows uses a PowerShell installer script that the README suggests inspecting before you run it.
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/DeusData/codebase-memory-mcp/main/install.sh | bash
Requirements: macOS (arm64 or amd64), Linux (arm64 or amd64) or Windows (amd64) and an MCP-capable agent; no language runtime, Docker or API key.
Always follow the official instructions in the README on GitHub. This overview is our summary, not a copy.
