Cursor
An AI code editor and coding agent that plans, writes and reviews code on your desktop, in the terminal, in Slack and in the cloud.
What Cursor does
Cursor is a code editor built around an AI agent. You hand it a task, such as a feature, a bug or a refactor, and the agent explores the codebase, proposes a plan and makes the edits for you to review. The docs describe a Plan Mode for scoping larger changes and tools for inspecting diffs before they are merged. Teams can add rules, skills, MCP servers and plugins to shape how the agent behaves.
The desktop app runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. A CLI brings the same agent to the terminal, and cloud agents run tasks on remote machines in parallel, then return the result for review. Cursor also works inside Slack, where a teammate can mention it in a thread, and reviews pull requests on GitHub through Bugbot. The docs list connections to GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, JetBrains, Slack and Linear, and model choice spans providers including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.
For developers who want to script it, Cursor has a Cloud Agents API (in beta, on all plans) plus TypeScript and Python SDKs for running agent workflows. According to the docs, they run agent workflows with workspace context and tools, so they cannot stand in for a chat-completions API. Admin, analytics, code tracking and Bugbot APIs are limited to Enterprise teams.
Privacy Mode can be switched on by a user or enforced by a team admin. It suits developers who want an agent inside their editor, and teams that want shared rules, centralized billing and SSO.
- Hand a feature or bug to the agent and review the resulting diff in the editor.
- Run several cloud agents in parallel on separate tasks.
- Ask Cursor to take on a request from a Slack thread.
- Review pull requests on GitHub with Bugbot.
- Start agent workflows from code with the Cloud Agents API or the TypeScript and Python SDKs.
Who should use it
- Developers who want an agent built into their main editor.
- Teams that want shared rules, skills and plugins plus SSO and centralized billing.
Who should look elsewhere
- Developers who need a plain chat-completions API, which Cursor says its agent APIs are not.
- Organizations that want admin or analytics APIs without an Enterprise contract.
Strengths
- One agent across the desktop editor, CLI, cloud agents, Slack and GitHub.
- Supports models from several providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI and Google.
- Desktop builds for macOS, Windows and Linux on both x64 and ARM64.
- Privacy Mode can be enforced team-wide by an admin.
Limitations
- The free Hobby plan has limited Agent requests.
- Usage beyond each plan's included amount is billed on demand at model rates.
- Admin, analytics, AI code tracking and Bugbot APIs are Enterprise-only.
- The Cloud Agents API is still in beta.
Privacy notes
Cursor says that with Privacy Mode on, code data is not used for training by Cursor or its model providers, and it has zero data retention agreements with its providers. With Privacy Mode off, Cursor may store and use codebase data, prompts and editor actions to improve features and train models.
