Claude Code
Anthropic's coding agent that reads a codebase, edits files and runs commands from the terminal, IDE, desktop app or web.
What Claude Code does
Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. You describe a task in plain language, and it reads the relevant parts of your repository, plans an approach, edits files across the project, runs commands and checks the result. It also works with git directly: it can stage changes, write commit messages, create branches and open pull requests.
The same engine runs on several surfaces. There is a terminal CLI for macOS, Linux, WSL and Windows, extensions for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, a desktop app, and a web version at claude.ai/code that also opens from the Claude iOS and Android apps. Project instructions live in a CLAUDE.md file, and the docs say it can read an existing AGENTS.md too. Teams can package repeatable workflows as skills, run shell commands before or after actions with hooks, and connect outside tools such as Jira, Google Drive or Slack through MCP servers.
For automation, the CLI accepts piped input and runs non-interactively, so it fits into scripts and CI. Anthropic documents GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD setups for review and issue triage, cloud routines that run on a schedule, and an Agent SDK for building custom agents on Claude Code's tools.
Access comes through a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or an Anthropic Console account billed at API rates. The terminal CLI, VS Code and JetBrains versions can also use third-party providers such as Amazon Bedrock. It suits developers who are comfortable letting an agent change files and run commands in their repository, and teams that want the same agent setup in the editor, the terminal and CI.
- Fix bugs by pasting an error message and letting the agent trace the cause and edit the code.
- Write tests, fix lint errors, resolve merge conflicts and update dependencies across a project.
- Create commits, branches and pull requests from a plain-language request.
- Automate pull request review and issue triage in GitHub Actions or GitLab CI/CD.
- Run scheduled jobs such as overnight CI failure analysis with cloud routines.
Who should use it
- Developers who want an agent that edits files and runs commands in a real repository.
- Teams that want shared project instructions, skills and MCP servers across the terminal, IDE and CI.
Who should look elsewhere
- People who want to use it without paying, since the Free Claude plan does not include it.
- Developers who only want inline autocomplete in an editor.
Strengths
- One engine across the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop, web and mobile, sharing CLAUDE.md files, settings and MCP servers.
- Scriptable CLI with piped input and non-interactive runs for CI and shell pipelines.
- Extensible through skills, hooks, subagents, MCP servers and the Agent SDK.
- Terminal, VS Code and JetBrains versions can run against Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud's Agent Platform or Microsoft Foundry.
Limitations
- Requires a paid Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account; the desktop app needs a paid subscription.
- Usage limits apply on subscription plans, and Anthropic says plans and prices can change.
- The JetBrains plugin needs the CLI installed separately, and the Linux desktop app is in beta on Ubuntu and Debian.
- The source repository on GitHub is proprietary: its licence reserves all rights to Anthropic.
Privacy notes
Anthropic's docs say Free, Pro and Max users choose whether their data is used for model training, with 5-year retention if they allow it and 30 days if not. Team, Enterprise and API usage is not used for training under commercial terms and has a standard 30-day retention, with zero data retention available to qualified Enterprise accounts.
