Devin Desktop
Cognition's AI code editor, formerly Windsurf, for running and reviewing local and cloud coding agents from one app.
What Devin Desktop does
Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf, Cognition's AI code editor. The rename arrived as an over-the-air update on June 2, 2026. Cognition says Windsurf settings carry over automatically, the full Windsurf IDE is still there, and existing plans and prices did not change.
The app pairs an editor with an Agent Command Center. You describe a task, hand it to an agent, and track its sessions, pull requests and CI status on a board or list. Spaces group the sessions, files and context for one project, and agents in a Space can share Git worktrees. The editor itself has syntax highlighting, debugging, Tab completions and Supercomplete suggestions, so you can read and fix what an agent changed.
Agents can run locally (Devin Local) or in the cloud (Devin Cloud). Through the Agent Client Protocol, Pro, Max and Teams users can also run third-party agents inside the app, including Codex CLI, Claude Agent, OpenCode, Junie and Gemini CLI. Those agents are billed by their own providers, and Devin Desktop's privacy policy and terms do not cover them. MCP servers, memories, rules and workflows customize agent behavior.
Devin Desktop runs on macOS, Windows and Linux. A separate Devin CLI works in the terminal. Older Windsurf plugins for VS Code, Visual Studio, Vim, Neovim, Jupyter, Chrome and Eclipse are in maintenance mode, as is the local JetBrains plugin; for JetBrains remote development, Cognition points users to Devin over ACP. It fits developers who want several coding agents, including ones from other vendors, managed and reviewed from one editor.
- Assign tasks to several local and cloud agents and track their sessions, pull requests and CI status on one board.
- Group agent sessions, files and Git worktrees for a project in a Space.
- Run third-party agents such as Codex CLI or Claude Agent inside the same editor through ACP.
- Review and debug agent changes in the built-in IDE.
Who should use it
- Developers who run more than one coding agent and want to manage them from one editor.
- Existing Windsurf users, whose settings and plans carry over.
Who should look elsewhere
- Developers who mainly use VS Code, Vim or Chrome plugins, which are in maintenance mode.
- Teams with more than 200 users on the self-serve Teams plan, which caps membership there.
Strengths
- Runs Cognition's own agents and third-party ACP agents in one app.
- Spaces share context and Git worktrees across agents working on the same project.
- Full IDE with debugging, Tab completions and Supercomplete alongside the agent board.
- Free plan includes unlimited inline edits and Tab completions.
Limitations
- The Free plan has a light quota and limited model availability.
- Paid usage allowances refresh daily and weekly, and going past them means buying extra usage at API pricing.
- ACP third-party agents need a Pro, Max or Teams plan and are billed by their own providers.
- Legacy editor plugins are in maintenance mode, and the JetBrains remote development plugin is no longer maintained.
Privacy notes
Cognition's security documentation says customer data may be used for model training by default, paid plan users can opt out in Data Controls (Teams needs admin approval), and Enterprise data needs express prior written consent. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and Cognition reports SOC 2 Type II certification since September 2024.
